Irvine, Calif. (May 2, 2011) – Lasher Motorsports Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Mike Lasher blasted across the Nevada desert in his Kawasaki Teryx™ to finish third in the Bilek Racing Silver State 300. Located 180-miles north of Las Vegas, Nev., near the town of Alamo, Round 2 for the UTV class of the Best in the Desert series proved to be a high-speed, action-packed race. The 305-mile course consisted of tough desert terrain packed with every type of obstacle imaginable. From wide-open fire roads to tight rocky mountain-trails, this diverse course even included two water crossings. Although the sky was clear and sunny, the weather was freezing cold the morning of race day, with temperatures below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. The demanding race’s combination of speed and jagged terrain would take out two of Lasher’s tires and a wheel, before the end of the race. After almost eight hours speeding through the desert, Lasher and his co-driver outran 13 other UTV teams to finish on the podium in third place.
Bringing a Gun to a Knife Fight
Since the last BITD event in Parker, Ariz., Lasher made some significant upgrades to his Kawasaki Teryx to ensure he would have the edge over the competition coming into the Silver State 300. Among the upgrades included a Muzzy-built motor, Billett King’s new rear-brake kit, EPI tuned clutches, PRP podium seats, and a fresh tuned XMF long-travel kit with Walker Evans shocks. The improvements paid off as Lasher finished the race in less than eight hours, despite having to repair two flats and a punctured wheel.

“We had a great weekend,” said Lasher. “This was the first race we ran the Muzzy’s power-plant, and it was a monster. The Teryx was so much fun to drive, the power it had coming out of the corners was phenomenal. With the new engine we felt like we were bringing a gun to a knife fight. Because of the draw, we started out sixth in our class. We were able to get though the course relatively fast and powered our way into third place by the end of the race. Everything worked out great, from our overall race strategy to our pit-support. It was really cold all day which worked to our advantage as well. The temperature started out at 40 degrees and never got over 65 degrees, so we didn’t have to run any of our cooling fans the entire race. The course was really challenging, with some serious elevation changes, and loaded with really sharp rocks, but overall it was a lot of fun to race.”
Wally World
At the half-way point of the race, Lasher handed over the wheel to co-driver Rick “Wally World” Wallace to finish out the race. Wallace took over the wheel in third place and rode a clean, fast race. He maintained the fast pace set by Lasher, and was making up ground when a rock punctured his wheel. After a quick wheel change he got back up to speed and crossed the finish in third place. Out of 220 total race entries, the Lasher Motorsports Monster Energy Kawasaki team finished the in the top 65.
Hot Pursuit
The UTV class blasted off the start at 7 a.m., followed by the trophy trucks who left the start at 9:30 a.m. Since the trophy trucks are bigger and faster than the vehicles in the UTV class, the UTV pilots set a goal of getting across the finish before being overtaken by the pack of thunderous trophy trucks.

“Our goal was to finish ahead of the trophy trucks,” said Lasher. “Monster Energy’s BJ Baldwin started an hour and a half behind us in his truck. We kept checking for Balwin’s truck in our rear-view mirror throughout the race because we knew he was moving through the field pretty quickly. Those trucks can reach speeds over 120 mph and we like to get off the course before they catch up to us. Even though we popped a couple tires, and punctured a wheel, we still maintained a really fast pace and finished ahead of the trophy trucks.”
The Super Star of Gran Prix
In two weeks, the Lasher Motorsports Monster Energy Kawasaki team will travel to Parker, Ariz., for Round 3 of the Best in the Desert series at the Epic Racing Bluewater Gran Prix. Lasher and co-driver Wallace will be looking to have a flat-free race so they can climb to the top of the podium.

Irvine, Calif. (January 24, 2010) – The Monster Energy Kawasaki UTV team has grown larger for 2011, building on an already impressive roster, aimed at attacking all disciplines the side-by-side world has to offer. From short courses to desert, expect to see the Monster Energy Kawasaki UTV team in full force and in serious contention for championships. The diverse team, hand-picked by Monster Energy Kawasaki Team Green™ manager Reid Nordin, has been assembled to decimate the competition racing the 2011 Kawasaki Teryx® RUV. This year’s team includes a list of proven racers who know what it takes to win championships, including Chad George, Mike Lasher, Bobby Van Beekum, Jon Crowley, Casey Currie, and Brian Bennett.

“This year we have expanded the Monster Energy Kawasaki UTV team,” said Nordin. “We have selected a great group of proven racers from a diverse field to compete in several different off-road series and events. Pairing skilled drivers with the Kawasaki Teryx RUV’s powerful V-twin engine and proven power-train is a winning combination.”

Returning for his fourth year on the Funco Monster Energy Kawasaki team, Chad George is no stranger to winning. This season George will be focusing his talent in the Lucas Oil Off-Road Racing Series. With four LOORRS championships already under his belt, expect this veteran to be tracking down more trophies in his Kawasaki Teryx. With its V-twin power-plant at his command, George has proven to be one of the fiercest competitors in the series.

While he is officially the new kid on the Muzzys Monster Energy Kawasaki team, Bobby Van Beekum, is no rookie to off-road racing. Finishing third in the overall points in last years LOORRS series, Van Beekum knows how to find the podium. Building momentum from several wins last season, expect Van Beekum to give every racer in the LOORRS series a run for their money.

Veteran UTV racer Mike Lasher will also continue to represent Lasher Motorsports Monster Energy Kawasaki this season. Lasher finished second in the Best in the Desert overall points last year and is looking to take one more step up the podium in 2011 to claim the championship title. In addition to his run for the BITD championship, Lasher will also be racing in the Southern Nevada Off-Road Enthusiasts racing series.

Coming back for a second year representing the Monster Energy Kawasaki off-road race team is resident Traxxas TORC Pro Light champion, Casey Currie. When he is not blasting through checkered flags in his Monster Energy Kawasaki Pro Light truck, Currie will be piloting his Kawasaki Teryx in several select race events throughout the year.

Representing Crowley Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing for another season, Jon Crowley is looking to come out on top in both the Valley Off-Road Racing Association series and Hammerking Productions events this season. Having raced in the King of the Hammers since its inception, Crowley knows what it takes to win and has put together a bulletproof team to help him get there.

Known for his ability to customize a Kawasaki Teryx for just about anyone anywhere, Brian Bennett is renowned for his engineering prowess. Leading the Long Travel Industries Monster Energy Kawasaki race team, he also plans on showing the competition his skills extend beyond the fabrication shop. Racing in any of his beautifully customized Kawasaki Teryx machines never fails to draw a crowd of envious onlookers.

For the 2011 race season, the Monster Energy Kawasaki UTV race team will be infiltrating several off-road race series. Look for our racers at the LOORS, BITD, Hammerking Productions events, SNORE, VORRA, ASCC, and several other high profile off-road race events. Monster Energy Kawasaki Team Green will be on hand at several UTV events in 2011 to offer technical assistance and emergency parts to support Kawasaki Teryx owners.

Idle Chat with Mike Lasher

Kawasaki UTV driver Mike Lasher has been involved in side by side racing for a long time and has been known to put his Monster Energy Lasher Motorsports Kawasaki Teryx on the podium a time or two. After a season of ups and downs in 2010, Lasher and his teams have seen their off-season testing paid off with a second-place finish at the first Best in the Desert race in Parker, Ariz. We sat down with Lasher to see what how his new season is shaping up.

Monster Energy Kawasaki: Last year you had a roller coaster season and now you started 2011 off with a bang. What have you guys done to get back on the podium?
Mike Lasher: Last year was a season of challenges to say the least. This is our third year running the Kawasaki Teryx. The first year we ran it mostly out of the box for the season and we were really happy with our results. We just wanted more. So we had a big plan to tear the car down and build it bigger, better, stronger. Well, we changed from a carbureted motor to a fuel injected motor and that just put a little wrench in our program. It seemed like at every race, we had something come up.

We would hit the desert every time we could to practice and tune things in. It all came together in Parker. We wanted to win, but I’m extremely happy with the second place and I know we can build our program from here.

Parker has always been known for an extremely rough course as sections of it have been used for over 30 years of off-road racing.

We took off from the line and headed into the sun and towards Osborne wash and had as idea of conditions as you could expect for desert racing. The sun was a little higher in the sky than usual to help keep it out of our eyes and a large rain previously kept a lot of water in the ground to keep the dust down. Our Monster Energy Kawasaki Teryx was working great early in the race. Our Teryx seemed to have more power than it ever has as our Muzzy’s built motor was running perfectly! Our GBC Dirt Commanders tackled the rocky sandy washes with ease giving us the traction we needed to pull through the washes and move ahead. By the time that we pulled into the first pit on the first lap we had moved up into the 4th position and were right behind third. The next section of the course was one of our favorites as you can hold the car wide open sliding through the corners for miles on end. Here we would pass another team that was on the side of the road and take the third position. Our XMF Long travel suspension with Walker Evans shocks worked so well in the rough desert of Parker that we were able to run hard and fast. We battled back and forth with the 1919 team trading positions a couple of times. Coming into the main pit on the first lap we were able to pass the first place car and take the lead.

A quick pit stop that included a driver change so Rick “Wally World” Wallace could drive the second lap and a splash of fuel and we were in and out of the pit in no time. Our co-driver Pete Negrete was feeling good enough that he was going to run booth laps and keep Wally under control too! Our team really pulled it together on this pit stop and got us out in record time. The second lap would be uneventful for a majority of the lap as our Monster Energy Kawasaki Teryx ran flawless throughout the rough Parker terrain and stayed in the front battling back and forth with the 1919 team for the lead. A front flat tire with 6 miles to go in the race took us out of contention for the win when we missed a rock and punctured the tire. Our Walker Evans bead locked wheels allowed us to finish the race without having to stop and change the flat tire.

When the dust settled we were able to secure a second place finish and start the 2011 season in the right direction.

The Next race for the Lasher Motorsports team will be the SNORE Battle at Primm in February.

Monster Energy Kawasaki Race Report

I guess I can start off by saying this race just wasn’t in the cards for us! It just wasn’t good from the beginning, We showed up to staging on time and ready to go. Hanging out in the back of the group because we knew we were one of the last ones to go off the line. Next thing we realize BITD lines us up after two sportsman UTVs. Try talking to them but they don’t understand what we are trying to tell them. Oh well we start knowing we will have to pass a couple of cars. Right before the start line the one of the RZR 4 stop and jump out of the car. We pull around them and now take the green light.
We Start side by side with the 1905 Rhino and not 100 yards past the start line the car shifts into neutral. In all the moving around before the race I Didn’t have the car fully engaged in High. Stop slam it into gear and were racing again. We come out right behind the 1905 and get to pass them on the first option line. Next up is a Sportsman Rhino to pass. We pass them just pulling onto the paved road and hit the gas trying to catch the others. Around mile 9 the dust was so bad we couldn’t see anything. We managed to just get off the track and thank goodness the dust cleared because when it did there was a checkpoint worker parked only 5′ from the course. We slammed the brakes and just missed him. Shortly after that we saw the Jagged X team stopped on the side of the road. Our car was running great! The Muzzy’s motor and XMF long travel and Walker Evans shocks were working great! We continued to pick off cars and finished the first lap moving into the fourth spot. We passed the silver rhino in the pits wile they were stopped and we were right on the Murry’s bumper.
Just after the OK to pass sign exiting the Main pit we passed Murry. (Sorry about the tap) This put us physically in second and we were 3 minutes behind them on the course. Our pit crew said we were only a minute behind them on corrected time. We charged hard on the second lap trying to make up more time no that we had some clear air and could see where we were going. Just before pit two our crew comes over the radio and tells us that Jerome is only a minute ahead of us physically. This means we are ahead of him on corrected time. We stop in pit 2 for a splash of fuel knowing that we were gonna have to do three laps and couldn’t make it all the way on one tank. When we pulled into the pits and stopped the car died. We were not able to get it refired and had to have it towed back to the main pit.

I want to say thank you to Wally World, Paul, Mike V, Randy Clary, and Lucas Hand for all their help this weekend. I couldn’t have done it without you!

Thanks to our sponsors who have supported us through this rough season. Monster Energy, Kawasaki, GBC Motorsports, Walker Evans, XMF, Muzzys, K&N, Sommers Bros, Billet King, Pro Armor, Hostyle and UTV Underground.
